Top 5 Ways To Deter Burglars

As a homeowner and a parent, you want to make a safe and secure home your top priority. Admittedly, this can be an impossible battle. There are far too many potential threats that could affect your home, from extreme weather to severe property damages. Burglars, of course, are among the many possible threats. In this article, we’ll discuss the most effective approaches you can take to keep potential burglars at bay.

Security cameras have become mainstream technology now. They are more and more frequently seen at the front and back of residential properties, and it’s no surprise as they’re one of the most effective deterrents for burglars. In fact, placing security cameras on your property can deter almost the majority of burglars if they can’t see a clear path out of the camera’s sight.

Indeed, you have to remember that most burglary cases are opportunistic. So, presenting visible CCTV cameras on your property will remove most opportunities, and therefore keep your home safe.

#2. Adopt a guard dog

A dog is man’s best friend. But it can also serve as a reliable protection against potential criminals. Of course, it is fair to say that not all dogs will deter burglars. But territorial dog’s breeds that are strong and tall can do the trick.

That being said, your dog can protect your home in many ways. First of all, barking can discourage intruders. Indeed, barking can alert the owners (or the neighbors) of a risk, which will make the burglar’s presence known.

Additionally, some breeds can be specifically trained for guarding purposes, which means they can recognize and attack burglars.

Garden fences can be an elegant addition to your home, improving curb appeal and privacy.  But, those physical barriers can also create an additional layer of protection for your property. A solid fence can be difficult to climb or see through, which makes it more challenging to target your property.

You can also install a motion sensor light system in the garden. This will illuminate when it senses motion at night, which is ideal to keep suspicious activity at bay.

#4. Secure doors and windows

While this is a no-brainer, you’d be surprised to know that the number one cause for burglary is an open door or window. Burglars exploit opportunities and vulnerabilities to gain access to your home. Leaving a window open or having a backdoor that doesn’t lock is essentially an invitation!

You want to consider sturdy doors and windows that can prevent break-ins.

#5. Create the illusion of occupancy

Most criminals target homes that look empty. Therefore, if you can make it look like your home is occupied even when you’re not here. You can deter many burglars. You can use timers to turn on lights or electronics, such as TVs or radios at different times throughout the day, for example.
