The sooner you start helping them with their understanding of language, the better. Try to relax around the whole issue of language a little, and you should find that this makes an enormous difference to how much your child can do the same, even from a very early age. This will then lead to a much better relationship with language and ability for it.

Use Repetition & Rhyme

Read Together

An essential task that you always need to do as much as possible with your kid is to make sure you are reading together wherever you can. Reading together is extremely important, as there are few activities which are quite as powerful for ensuring that your child is really delving deep into language from an early age. Again, it’s all about making it fun and using repetition where necessary – and you’ll find that children’s books make good use of both of those elements, of course. All in all, this will help your kid to learn a lot more when it comes to language use.

Speak With Them Appropriate To Their Age

Throughout all of this, you should be speaking with them wherever possible, and you’ll want to make sure that you are doing this as appropriately as possible. What that essentially means is that you are considering what their age is and talking in a way that they are going to be able to grasp in some sense. Research suggests it is actually helpful to use baby talk when they are babies, for instance. And then of course as they develop and grow older, your use of language with them will likewise mature to meet them where they are. If you are speaking appropriately, you’ll find that it makes it much more likely you are going to find success with their language skills.

Encourage Independent Learning

As they get a little older, you’ll want to start encouraging them to learn more independently with regard to their use of language. In other words, it will become vital to make sure that they are reading what they want to read and that they do so independently as well as with you, if that is still something you are doing together. The more that you encourage their independence in this way, the more that they are going to develop their language skills, so it’s a really important and powerful practice that you will want to bear in mind.

Writing

Of course, another important element in language is writing, and you should aim to encourage your child in this area too if possible. Writing is hugely necessary as a means of figuring out how to express oneself, and there are so many ways in which your child will benefit from being able to write well. You should therefore try to make sure they’re doing this – you could even teach them to write various kinds of literature together, from poetry to short stories and more. That is going to help you out in a big way and you will find that you are much more likely to have high hopes for their future relationship with language.

Those are just some of the things you can focus on if you want to improve your child’s relationship with language. As long as you are aware of these, you’ll find that this is a lot easier and simpler.
