What’s Wrong With My Teenager?

Having a teenager can be a very difficult experience in so many ways, and it is something that you are going to find takes a considerable amount of patience and care if you want to get it just right. With so many countless issues that can come up in the life of a teenager, it can be hard to keep on top of it all as a parent. But there are a few common issues that can and will come up time and time again. In this post, we’ll look at them, and discuss how you can best approach these unfortunate situations.

Mood Swings

One of the things you can most expect from teenagers is the occasional mood swings. These can be extreme or subtle, depending on the individual, and anywhere in between on the scale too. But the important thing is to know how to deal with the situation, and often the best way is to simply let it play out. Allow them to have their feelings, vent, and do whatever is necessary. You can think of it like a fire that needs to burn out – you just have to be patient, and step in if the fire threatens to destroy something.

Substance Abuse

It is usually around the teenage years that people will start to experiment with different substances, such as drugs and alcohol. Some of this is to be expected, but you are going to want to ensure that you are keeping a close eye on this kind of behavior, and taking action where necessary to stop it from getting too bad. Substance abuse is something else altogether, and a serious issue that needs interventional help. Get your teen alcohol treatment or help with drug use if necessary, and remind them that you love them as you do so.

Lashing Out

Sometimes you will find that your teen just lashes out at you for seemingly no good reason at all. When this happens, there are many routes you can take, but usually the best is to enforce some kind of discipline. As long as you do that, you should find that it helps in putting an end to it right away, and it also makes it less likely to happen again in the future, which is important for them and for you, and for the whole family in a wider sense as well. Getting the discipline right is a very important thing to do.

Poor Grades

We all know how important education is, and if your teen is not doing well at school that can be a real problem. Poor grades are not something to ignore, as they can also be indicative of wider issues as well. The most important thing is to talk to them, find out what is wrong, and help them to get through it as quickly and smoothly as possible. If you can do that, you should find that it really enables them to improve – and this is good news for their future as much as anything else.
