Proven Techniques for Soothing a Crying Baby

Although they are mere infants, babies deal with many emotions. As adults, we understand when we’re hungry, tired, or on edge from something, whereas all those feelings are new to a baby. Thus, babies are prone to turn on the waterworks, and finding the remedy for them to stop can be challenging. But these proven techniques for soothing a crying baby are a great place to start.

Sing a Song

There’s a reason “Mockingbird” remains a go-to song for generations. It’s because it continues to calm a fussy baby. Even if it isn’t the classic song from Inez and Charlie Foxx, singing a song can help make the tears dry up.

Your baby isn’t like a judge for American Idol, so they won’t get upset if you’re a bit pitchy. Instead, they will smile because they can sense your love for them. You can sing a classic nursery rhyme or opt for one of your favorite tunes you know by heart. Either way, the soft, melodic tone should work wonders.

Rockabye Baby

As you try your best to carry a tune, do so in a rocking chair while rocking your baby in your arms. If that doesn’t suffice, you can try putting them in a vibrating bouncy seat or using a motorized baby swing with their favorite lovey that they bonded with. Always adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for using these products safely, including any limits on age or weight.

White Noise

A white noise machine works tremendously well for adults who require a slight hum to rest easy. Similarly, babies love the calming sounds it provides. Whooshing music or white noise may help soothe certain infants since it sounds like the currents in the uterus. A fan is the best option unless you want to buy a machine capable of multiple sounds that will please your child.

Wearable Carrier

Speaking of the calming effect of simulating the experience of being in the uterus, carrying your baby in a carrier is an excellent idea. Young infants adore being as close to their parents as possible, and carrying them throughout the house will wear out your arms, shoulders, and back quicker than you think. An ergonomic baby carrier is an excellent compromise to make the baby feel close without aches and pains.

Rub-a-Dub-Dub, Get in the Tub

When all else fails, you can always give them a bath. Children of all ages love water, which is why many pool parties will be in your future. Infants and toddlers, in particular, love their bath time. Drawing a bath and letting them soak and play with a rubber ducky or two will help them forget why they were upset in the first place, especially if you incorporate some bubbles.

These proven techniques for soothing a crying baby are evergreen. No matter how much people change through generations, most babies are the same and enjoy the same things. So, if your child is prone to the occasional fit because their mood fits one of Snow White’s seven dwarfs, have a noise machine, bubble bath, and baby carrier on standby.
