Moving Home Delays: What to Do When You’re Temporarily Homeless

The ideal way to move home is to have somewhere new to go before you’re due to move out of your current home. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen that way, whether you’re renting or you’re a homeowner. You can end up having a gap between your new home becoming available and having to leave your current one. Maybe you’ve sold your home but haven’t yet gained the keys to your new one, or your tenancy is over, but your next one doesn’t start for a while. You might not even have found somewhere new to live yet. This can be a frightening situation, but there are some steps you can take to make it easier.

Find Somewhere to Stay

The first thing you’ll need to be sure of is where you’re going to go until you’re able to move into your new home. If you’re lucky, you might have friends or family you can stay with. This is often the best option for just a short period because it’s likely to save you money. It might even be fun to stay with relatives or friends for a little while. However, if this isn’t an option, there are other types of temporary accommodation to consider. A short-term rental could be an option, especially for a longer gap or one of unknown length. It’s also worth considering hotels if it’s just for a few days or a week or so.

Look for Somewhere to Store Your Stuff

Having to move out of one place but not yet having somewhere new to move into means you need somewhere to put your stuff. Even if you’re staying with friends or family, they’re unlikely to have space for all of your things. The best option is most likely to look for affordable storage so you can store anything that you’re not using. Flexible self-storage space is best because it allows you to visit the space and get anything that you might need. It makes more sense than putting all of your things out of sight and not having access to them.

Go on Vacation

Once you’ve secured somewhere to store your things, you might decide not to stick around. If you’re waiting for your new property to become available, it could be the ideal time to take a vacation. Why not choose to get away for a while and have some fun? It could give you the option to relax and have fun, instead of feeling stressed while you’re staying in temporary accommodation.

Don’t Rush Moving Into Somewhere New

If you don’t yet have somewhere new to go to, you can feel a lot of pressure to find somewhere as quickly as possible. You might feel like you’re inconveniencing whoever you’re staying with, or you could be paying a lot for temporary accommodation and storage. While time is of the essence, don’t feel so rushed that you choose an unsuitable property. You still need to find somewhere that meets your needs.

A gap between moving dates can be stressful, but you can work it out if you plan what to do before moving out.
