Is Buying A House In The Countryside Really A Good Idea?

If you’re fed up with the noise and the fast-paced life in the city, you might think that buying a property in the countryside is a great idea. A lot of people have this romantic idea of moving into a rural area, but it’s not always how they imagine it when they get there. It’s a massive adjustment and people often find that they miss a lot of the things that they took for granted when they lived in the city. Once you move, you won’t be able to afford to just move back right away so you’ll be stuck there for a while at least. That’s why it’s important that you consider the decision before you rush into anything. These are some of the biggest things to think about before moving to the countryside.

Choice Of Homes Is Limited

If you’re buying a property in a more populated area, you have plenty of choices. You can go for a new build house, an older property, or even an apartment if you like. But in rural areas, you don’t have anywhere near as much choice. New builds are few and far between and apartments are basically non-existent so you’ll be limited to an older property. If you had your heart set on a new build, a move to the country might not be a good idea.

There Is A Lot Of Maintenance

Those older properties come with a lot of maintenance and some people aren’t prepared for that when they make a move to the country. A lot of rural homes are not linked up to the main water supply, which means that you will need to use a septic tank for your toilets. You will need to call out companies like foothill sanitary on a fairly regular basis to empty and maintain the tank. You’re more likely to have safety issues with your water as well because it’s coming directly from the water table rather than the mains system. The electricity system in rural areas is not as reliable either, and you may have to rely on generators. Keeping a rural house up and running takes a lot more work and you need to think about whether you’re prepared to deal with all of that maintenance.

You Can Easily Get Bored

When you’re living in the city, you get used to being able to go around the corner and find bars and restaurants and there’s always something going on nearby. But when you move to the country, you’re not going to find that. You may not even have a shop within walking distance, so you’ll be driving everywhere and there won’t be that many places to go out. A lot of people find it hard to adjust and they end up getting very bored living in a rural area. On the other hand, some people prefer having all of that open space around them. It’s great for families that want their kids to be active, for example, but it doesn’t work for everybody. If you’re going to make the move, you have to consider whether you’re prepared to leave the convenience of the city behind.

Moving to the country might be a good fit for you but a lot of people have the wrong idea about it and end up regretting it. Before you make your decision, you need to consider these things.
