If you are considering moving out of state, one place you should consider moving to is Norfolk, Virginia. I recently visited with my family and not only did we enjoy our time there, but we all also agreed that we could foresee us moving there permanently. After doing some of my own research and experiencing some of what Norfolk has to offer personally, I’d like to share with you 4 great reasons why I’d consider making the move and why you should to.
Cost Of Living Is Reasonable (Not High But Average)
If you love the beaches but don’t want to pay the high price tag of own or renting a home there, you should consider making Norfolk your main hub and just travel over to the beaches whenever you can. Norfolk is generally a cheaper place to live than Chesapeake or Virginia Beach. Knowing this, I feel it’s a good option for working families.
If you are unable to settle into a house right away, then consider using a website such as Zumper to find the perfect home or apartment in the Norfolk area for you and your family. So what is Zumper you ask? It’s a website used by millions of renters to find houses, rooms, condos, or apartments for rent. You can submit a digital rental application and credit reports online to speed the process up. Inventory is updated in real-time, so you’ll always see new rentals on Zumper first. You can filter by location, price range, bedroom count, pet-friendly, or amenity and set an alert to get notifications when a new listing is posted. You will see for yourself the many benefits that come with using Zumper, so be sure to check it out.
According to Zumper, the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Norfolk is $925 in November 2020.
Great For Military Families
Although I may not know anyone personally who is currently based in the area, I did pick up on the sense of pride that Norfolk has when it comes to the military, especially the Navy. During our stay there, we had the chance to see several naval ships. It was nice hearing the oooh’s and ahh’s from everyone. We don’t get to see stuff like that too often in Delaware. So whether you move here or not and are ever in the area, make sure you thank these individuals for the sacrifice they have made for our country.
Jobs & The Economy
Norfolk’s economy is strong. Major industries include military, defense contracting, cargo ports, transportation, government contractors such as shipbuilders, health care, education, and tourism. Some of the major employers include the US Department of Defense, Norfolk Southern railways, and BAE Systems. Norfolk would make a great place for summer jobs due to the beaches and the many tourists who flock there during that time.
Surprisingly The Weather
If you are a lover of thunderstorms, I definitely recommend this area. Out of my 34 years on this Earth, THE absolute worst yet best thunderstorm I ever experienced was during my time here. It was raining so hard that I could barely see the car in front of me and the thunder and lightning were just so intense. There however is a flooding issue due to M=many parts of the city being below sea level because the land is slowly subsiding. With that said, consider investing in flood insurance.
I have provided you the four best reasons that come to mind to move to this beautiful area of Virginia. With every new location you move to, ALWAYS do your research first and make your decision later. I hope this helps someone out there make a decision on whether or not to move home and family to Norfolk. Thank you for reading!
