If you are thinking about doing some DIY for the first-time, you may think how hard can it be? Or, you may be petrified that you are going to end up destroying your home? No matter what camp you fall into, it is important to be prepared for your first DIY experience. This blog post is designed to help you with that. Read on to discover some important tips for first-time DIYers.

Protect your surfaces – It is surprising how many people just dive straight into their DIY task without considering the rest of the home. You need to make sure that all surfaces are protected. You don’t want to end up with purple paint on your lovely cream sofa after all!

Buy quality materials and equipment – They always say that a bad workman blames his tools, but how are you meant to do a good job if you are using poor quality tools and cheap materials? It is so important to invest in quality. Look for reputable suppliers like George Hill Timber when buying materials like wood, and make sure you read plenty of independent reviews before you buy any tools or equipment.

Always go too long, instead of too short – When you are cutting materials, it is always better to make things a bit too long, instead of a bit too short. After all, you can always cut something again, but you definitely can’t make a piece of wood or tile longer.

Make sure you get the right paint for the surface in question – Most DIY jobs around the home involve a bit of paint. If you are going to be painting, you need to make sure the paint you select is right for the surface in question. For instance, if you are going to be painting the ceiling, flat paint is fine. But this paint should not be used for the walls. This is because it is not as washable as paint with an eggshell or satin finish.

Deal with easy fixes first – It can be very tempting to go head first into DIY and tackle a show-stopping project. But, what is the point if you have easy fixes that have not been dealt with? These should always be the main priority.

Hopefully, you now feel more prepared for your first DIY experience. If you do not feel comfortable with the task in question, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It is always better to get someone else’s assistance rather than just giving it a go and hoping for the best. You could end up with a huge repair bill on your hands if you opt for the latter approach.
