Imagine that you have a favorite song. Further, imagine that you’re having a terrible day where nothing is going right. Then, you’re walking down the street, and you hear the strains of your favorite song coming from one of the street pianos found in your city. Your toes tap, and you smile a crinkly smile as you pass by and catch the pianist’s eye. Suddenly, your day doesn’t seem so bad anymore!

Street pianos have been popping up all over the world. From the slums of Kampala to the Kurfürstendamm in Berlin, pianos painted in bright, vibrant colors have been delivering equally vibrant joy each time someone, talented or otherwise, begins pressing keys. It doesn’t matter if that person plays 1920s boogie-woogie or the Appassionata sonata. street pianos are there for fun and to bring music to people.

Because these pianos are painted, they provide visual artists with an medium for expression that goes with the musical characteristics like soft pretzels go with spicy mustard. Such a conglomeration of artistic presence can inspire all manner of budding artists, musicians, and other forward-thinking folks. By appealing to these different people, these street pianos are a voice for peaceful coexistence in the world.

Your Personal Part

Pianos out in the open air need lots of care, and that’s where the Piano Buddies come in. Each Buddy is tasked with the upkeep of a piano, which includes cleaning it, seeing to repairs and maintenance, and protecting each piano from vandalism. It’s sad to say, but some people just don’t “get it” regarding the unifying influence of music and the arts. They’ll smash, deface, or otherwise mistreat these street pianos. It’s a Buddy’s job to try to ensure that doesn’t happen.
