So, Your Daughter Is Becoming A Woman

Teenage girls are quite possibly the most insecure group of people on the planet. They are filled with anxieties and worries about their changing bodies and social status, and it’s normal. If you think back, you were once a teenage girl yourself; you remember how insecure you felt as your boobs came in and your hips filled out. You probably also remember being in school and trying to hide a sanitary pad or tampon so that you can go to the bathroom without embarrassment.

Periods are a big deal for a teenage girl – or a ten-year-old, depending on when your daughter starts hers. Becoming a woman comes with cramps, hormone changes and unfamiliar bleeding that can all be quite traumatic to a young girl. On average, most girls start their periods around the age of 12, but it can happen earlier or later, and it’s usually dictated by when you started yours. It’s not always an easy conversation to have with your daughter. It can be embarrassing for her to have her mom come to talk to her about female issues – but it’s a must. Schools cover physical and sexual health, of course, but there’s nothing quite as reassuring as having a chat with mom about puberty and all the big changes to come. So, with all that in mind, it’s up to you to plan a conversation with your daughter about what she can expect, and here’s how to do it.

A Place. You’re not going to wander around the supermarket and engage in conversation about periods as you shop. You need to be tactful about where you have your discussion. Wait for an evening while she’s getting ready for bed and knock on the door of her room. Get cozy in her bed and talk generally about her and her day, then introduce the conversation.

A Gift. Womanhood comes with aches, pains and a lot of hormones to cope with. It would make things a ton easier to come bearing gifts! A Name Necklace silver pendant to mark the occasion (yes, a first period is an occasion!) is a wonderful gesture. Also, for your chat with your daughter, bring drinks, chocolate, and other tasty snacks. You could turn the entire awkward conversation into a mini sleepover and make it relaxed and fun.

Supplies. You’re a woman, so you know that periods don’t come without supplies. Put a box of supplies together and go through them with your daughter. You could include both disposable and cloth sanitary wear in pretty patterns, organic tampons of varying sizes and even a menstrual cup. Go through the options and let her decide what’s right for her. She is likely to start with pads and work her way through the box the older she gets and more body confident she becomes.

Periods aren’t an easy conversation to have, but it’s a must between mother and daughter. Pick a time that’s convenient and welcome your daughter to the club: she’s a woman now, congratulations to her!
