Save on Your Energy Bills This Winter

If you love your home and would like to make it more inviting and warmer, you can embark on an inexpensive home improvement project that will keep the warmth in and make your house look more homely. If your heating system is outdated, replacing the heater is not enough. You might want to look into some decorative and green features to add to your home and make it look and feel warmer. Below you will find some of the best ways of saving on your energy bills this winter and improving your house at the same time.

Look at Your Glazing Options

If you have older windows, you might want to replace them with an energy efficient one. If you live in a colder part of the country, it might be worth looking into a double glaze window and proper sealing of the frames. Old houses have the tendency to develop a gap between the window frame and the window itself, letting the air in.

Think about Solar Panel Windows

If you would like to make your home greener as well as warmer, you might want to invest in windows that generate energy at the same time as keeping you warm. While the cost of these windows and their installation is much higher than normal glass, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of a warm and green home for a long time.

Use Thermal Curtains

No matter how efficient your windows are, they will not keep all the cold air out. If you are in the middle of remodeling, try to look for decorative thermal curtains to dress the windows and even doors. You can find great designs online and in most home improvement stores.

Check the Seals for Doors and Windows

It is also important that you check the seals of your window, as they – just like the ones on your car –  can get damaged by the change of temperature. You might not need to replace the window itself, only the seals around it. Get a professional to inspect your doors and windows before the winter and provide you with advice on improving their efficiency.

Install an Electric Fireplace

To make your home look more inviting  and cozy, you might want to get a traditional or electric fireplace installed in your living space. You can get different designs that resemble real fires, and let out enough warmth for you to settle down after a long day at work with a cup of hot chocolate. If you spend most of your evenings in the living room, heating the whole house using the central heating might be a waste of energy and money.

There is nothing better than returning to a warm home from work on a cold winter evening or inviting friends over to sit and share a bottle of mulled wine by the fireplace. Make your house feel and look warmer this winter, and you will enjoy every night you spend there alone or with your friends.
