4 Must-Have Items for Spring 2020

It’s hard being a fashionista in the winter. Half the time it’s too cold to wear anything that doesn’t make you look like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, and even when it’s not, the shorter days mean less time to show off. To quote that famous philosopher, Miss Piggy, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it.” But if you can’t flaunt it, what’s the point of having it?

Luckily, like even the juiciest Snapchat story, winter is only temporary. Whether you’re charging Rodeo Drive haute couture to your sugar daddy’s credit card or making every penny count scouring the Internet for Nordstrom promotion codes, spring is here and that means it’s time for a shopping spree!

Here are some of spring 2020’s hottest styles that are manageable on any budget:

‘70s psychedelia

Everything old is new again. Unless it’s sushi; throw that out before it starts to smell. This year, the height of retro-chic means lots of earthy colors, mod patterns, and giant sunglasses. Pair a striped knit dress with a vintage denim jacket and sandals for a bohemian-meets-beach bum look or a floral maxi dress with white leather boots for a carefree hippie vibe. You don’t have to be a lunatic to wear fringe, but we promise it will drive admirers wild.

Super-sized bags

If you lamented how 2019’s microscopic mini-bags looked cool but were functionally useless, you’re in luck. This year the purse pendulum has swung in the opposite direction, meaning bigger is better. You’ll have plenty of room for your wallet, makeup, and a complete collection of encyclopedias with your new jumbo soft-sack hobo bag or XXL-sized woven crossbody. Just don’t get lost the next time you go digging for your eyeliner.

Midi & maxi denim

The great thing about spring is that it’s warm but not too warm, cool but not too cool. You don’t have to be Goldilocks, then, to see why midi and maxi denim skirts are juuuust right. The length and fabric are ideal for protecting you from a chilly breeze, without being heavy enough to weigh you down. Throw on a suede or leather jacket for a night on the town, or get dressy with a button-down white blouse. Jeans go with everything, and skirts are just plain fun. A good denim midi or maxi brings together the best of both worlds,

Colored leather

Leather is back, but not just in black! From smart-looking rolled-sleeve blazers to lightweight minidresses and sexy slit-up-the-side skirts, leather (or pleather, if you’re animal-friendly) adds a sleek, fetishy air of confidence to any outfit. Blacks and browns are a bit too muted for 2020, however, so brighten it up by going with bright ‘n’ brash blue, gorgeous green, marvelous marigold, or another color straight from your little sister’s Crayola box.
