Slow cook your meals

On those busy days where you have little free time, one of the best hacks for ensuring that your kids have a healthy, homemade meal is to opt for a slow cooker meal. These kinds of meals are fantastic because all you have to do is chop the ingredients, throw them all in together, and within a few hours, you’ll have a healthy, homemade meal.  A great tool for making slow cooker meals is, of course, a slow cooker. However, if you don’t have a slow cooker and don’t want to buy one, then a deep dish casserole pan can also work just as well. The great thing about slow cooker meals is the fact that there are so many different recipes to choose from, from soups and stews to curries and risottos.

Have a prep day

Another handy hack to take note of when it comes to making cooking healthy snacks easier for yourself is to set aside an afternoon each week to use for meal prep for the week ahead. What this means is that you spend some time preparing everything that you need for each meal for the week and then place all of the ingredients in separate, labeled tubs for each day. So, for instance, for a chicken stir-fry, you would dice the chicken and place in a lidded container, slice the veggies and herbs and place in another container, and if you were making a sauce, you’d make this up and place this in a third container. Then, when stir fry day comes around, all you’d need to do is put the ingredients in a pan and cook.

Batch cook and store

You could also opt to do some batch cooking once a week, making up a selection of your family’s favorite healthy meals. By batch cooking, you can make up large meals that can then be portioned up and placed in the fridge or freezer as a healthy alternative to ready meals. So on those days when there’s literally no time to cook, you don’t have to resort to feeding your kids frozen pizza or getting takeaway. Of course, a treat once in a while doesn’t hurt, but for the most part, it’s best to stay healthy and feed your kids wholesome meals.

Family life can get hectic, which is why knowing the best hacks for serving healthy, homemade family meals, for the most part, is so important.
