Baking soda

Baking soda is such an amazing substance with a range of uses. Baking soda is an excellent water softener and has excellent disinfectant and deodorizing qualities.

When baking soda is used as a scourer, grease and oils are easily dispersed, which is fantastic for cleaning, ovens, pans, and BBQs. Oven cleaners contain an alarming array of harmful chemicals, so finding a safe alternative is great news for the health of your family and the environment.

Another cleaner that contains harmful chemicals is those that are used to unblock drains. If you add vinegar to baking soda you will be able to unblock drains, without the use of chemicals. Repeat the process a number of times until the blockage clears.

Sprinkle baking soda onto carpets and pet smells will be eliminated. Be sure to vacuum thoroughly and the carpets will smell as new!

Olive oil

Olive oil is excellent for dusting when mixed with a little lemon juice or vinegar. Eliminating dust naturally will lower the incidence of respiratory conditions such as asthma. Asthma is exacerbated by dust, but can be made worse by breathing in chemicals used to clear the dust!

Olive oil is also excellent for cleaning gardening and kitchen equipment due to its lubricating qualities.

Even the humble lemon languishing at the back of your fridge has excellent cleaning properties. Lemon is fantastic for whitening clothes, with the added benefit of smelling fresh, this is due to the lemons bleaching effect. A countertop cleaner can be created by diluting lemon juice in a spray bottle. Your house will smell amazing, your work surfaces will gleam and you will be safe in the knowledge that the acidic properties of lemon will have eliminated germs.

White vinegar

Vinegar cleans just as effectively as any cleaner that can be bought. Like lemon, vinegar is acidic which makes it an excellent antifungal cleaner and antibacterial cleaner.

White vinegar can be used in all areas of the house. In your bathroom, vinegar used neat will remove limescale from your toilet and dissolve soap scum on your tiles leaving them shiny and fresh.
