Baby Hygiene: Why It’s Important And How To Achieve It

Bringing your newborn baby to his or her new home for the first time is a wonderful experience that every parent will remember for the rest of their lives. We try as hard as we can to make sure our home is ready and perfect for them. We agonize over choosing their crib, decorating their room and making sure that they have toys and cuddly companions so that they will never be bored or lonely. This is all well and good, but over time as we become more tired and stressed (and sleep deprived), our guards can lower and insidious invaders can creep into your home.

These invaders can seriously compromise your children’s health and it’s vital that parents keep them at bay at all costs. Of course these invaders are bacteria. Newborn babies are highly vulnerable to a range of neonatal infections keeping your home and baby hygienic is the best way to combat them. A clean and hygienic home is not only a safe place for your child while their immune system develops, it’s also a nicer place for parents to spend time in too.

Change diapers regularly and dispose of them properly

New parents often think nothing of throwing a diaper in the trash, but over time they can accumulate, resulting not only in an extremely unsanitary garbage can, but an unpleasant odor that no sane parent would want to spend time in. A good quality diaper pail will keep both the smell and harmful bacteria at bay. Check out for more information. Being a new parents is a stressful enterprise as it is and any measure that can help them achieve a semblance of normality (such as a kitchen that doesn’t smell of baby poop) is a blessing.

Beware… They put EVERYTHING in their mouths

As a child scoots along on all fours they experience the world not only by looking and listening, but by touch and taste. Unfortunately, they haven’t yet learned what should go in their mouths and what shouldn’t. Scan your home for anything that could potentially become an unofficial teething ring and sanitize it with child friendly anti-bacterial surface wipes.

Sterilize, sterilize, sterilize

The two second rule doesn’t apply to babies. While an adult may think nothing of popping a recently dropped candy bar into their mouths, anything that goes in baby’s mouth must be sterilized. Cleaning and sterilizing bottles is a never ending battle for new parents so do what you can to make the process quicker and easier. A sterilizing kit like the Milton Combi Sterilizer can be used to completely sterilize bottles (and any toys that might make their way into baby’s mouth) in just a couple of minutes in the microwave.

When cleaning baby, blitz those areas where bacteria lurk

As important as it is to keep a hygienic household, it’s equally important to keep your baby herself clean. When cleaning your baby it’s important to pay special attention to those hard to reach areas where bacteria can lurk. Clean gently under the finger and toenails and in those delicate little ears. Make sure that baby’s nose is unclogged and eyes are wiped with a moist towel or wet wipe regularly to prevent mucus buildup.

Just a little vigilance will make sure that your baby will be safe, happy and hygienic while you have some much needed peace of mind.
