4 Possible Reasons Your Water Bill Is Abnormally High This Month

It’s that dreaded time of the month where your bills come through and you open them with one eye closed to save the pain. Ah good, your energy bill is normal, everything else looks fine – hang on, what on earth is going on with the water bill?!

You’ve double-checked it, triple-checked it, and then pinched yourself to be sure you’re not dreaming. How can your bill be so abnormally high this month? It’s never usually like this – was there a glitch in the system, or is something more sinister at play?

High water bills are fairly common, and there are reasons for them. It’s good practice to monitor your water bill as it can help you identify some problems in your home! Speaking of which, here are some possible reasons your water bill is so high this month:

A dripping faucet

Believe it or not, but your water bill increase could all be down to a little dripping faucet. When you notice the bill is really high, look around your home for any dripping faucets. Each drip is water wasted, and consider how many times it will drip every day, all month. It adds up, which is why the bill is so high.

If this is the case, you might need to repair your faucet. Hopefully, a quick fix is all that’s required, or else you might need to replace the whole thing. Places like Mark’s Plumbing Parts provide faucet replacements, so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.

Plumbing leaks

Your faucets might be fine, but other parts of your plumbing system could be the problem. Leaks in your piping can lead to lots of water being wasted. Again, look for signs of leaks when you get your abnormally high water bill. If you spot areas of damp, it could be a sign of a leaky pipe.

It’s a good idea to call a plumber if you can’t see visible signs of leaks and you’re sure none of the other things on this list caused your high water bill. They can help find any hidden leaks, fixing them for you.

A running toilet

Does your toilet keep running after you flush it? Even if it only runs for a couple of minutes, that’s a lot of water you’re wasting each month. Fix a running toilet to stop it from using up more water than it should.

A change in habits

Finally, your water bill might be bigger because of a change in water habits the last month. Did you have guests over? Have the kids been off school all week? Both instances mean you are going to use more water than usual, so the bill will go up.

Likewise, have you started watering your garden more than you used to? Or, perhaps you recently bought a pool and have been filling it up? Think back to your habits over the last month to see if the bill is simply a case of you using more water than normal.

Hopefully, you can identify which one of these things caused your high water bill. From here, you can make any changes or fixes to save water and prevent the bill from being this high ever again.
